My practice of Shamanism and the occult has been focussed on the exploration of the deep-psyche, bridging the gap between the most repressed aspects of the cosmos & human nature and what we have been taught is acceptable in our society. A core aspect of esotericism that many want to avoid is black magic/dark matter energy, with lightworkers trying to remove darkness left, right and centre, neglecting it as the force of transformation that it really is. I approach these practices from the perspective of non-duality, helping my clients and students to uproot the parts of themselves that they have judged and neglected in order to bring greater wholeness to the collective.
What is it about darkness that makes us uneasy? Is it the fear of the unknown, the hidden, or the shadowy parts of ourselves we’d rather not confront? It is not an exaggeration when I say that bypassing the Shadow is a worldwide epidemic, causing chaos to emerge individually and collectively in order to break the trauma cycles that have been in action for generations. Black magic and shadow work often evoke similar reactions—fear, curiosity, or outright rejection. But what if black magic isn’t actually something to be feared but embraced as a powerful force for transformation and self-discovery?
Black magic is one of the most controversial subjects when it comes to esotericism, due to it being seen as a sinister force of pain and destruction. However, when we peel away the illusions, ego traps and myths, we realise that black magic and shadow work go hand in hand, offering a path to explore the hidden recesses of your mind, spirit, and reality. In this blog, we’ll dive deep into these practices, expose their myths, uncover their truths, and help you decide whether you’re ready to face the darkness and harness its power.
What Is Black Magic?
Dark Matter Energy
In order to understand what black magic really is from a perspective that is free from the illusions of duality, one must understand the function of dark matter energy in the cosmos. Dark matter refers to energy that is unseen, mysterious and possesses the majority of the cosmos. It is the energy that meets no boundaries and is pure potential. Dark matter is the current of the primordial chaos that exists outside of creation (light matter) and existed long before it. For this reason, the dark matter is seen as the feminine or dark womb that birthed creation with a single thought and represents the true source of everything.
The dark feminine birthed the light masculine from the depths of the void and order was established within the primordial chaos, manifesting the polarities of dark matter (chaos/feminine) and light matter (order/masculine). One could say this created two alternate universes that require each other to be able to function effectively.
Universe A & Universe B
Occultist, Kenneth Grant, referred to the polarities of light and dark matter as two separate states of consciousness. I have begun to refer to this when explaining the role of the polarities and how they fit into our evolutionary paths as human beings:
Universe A - holding structure and clarity, Universe A refers to the pure awareness that is the light matter and the pre-created multiverse that we incarnated in. A new-age term for Universe A would be "the matrix". This holds the specific laws of creation itself that have already been pre-defined. This multiverse is held together by a range of different organising principles that are each responsible for it's maintenance. The multiverse can be seen as a technology of pure awareness to facilitate the evolution of the soul, but also acts as a prison for it; as to which one it is for you, is up to you to decide. It is our evolutionary potential and attainment that defines our ability to transcend the multiverse once we die. Another way of referring to Universe A would be The Sephiroth (The Tree of Life), which shows the map of emanations of creation from pure oneness down to physical, tangible reality:
Universe B - whilst Universe A refers to light matter, structure and clarity, Universe B is the dark matter that deconstructs and breaks through all limitations, meeting no boundaries or laws. It refers to the primordial chaos where entire universes are created from, in other words, it is the realm of the shadow-self and the unconscious. Because it is the feminine and a mirror of the unconscious, one could say it holds the architectural plans and ideas that hold Universe A (the multiverse) into place, greatly influencing what occurs within Universe A. Universe B would represent the backside of the Tree of Life, The Qliphoth (Tree of Knowledge):
These polarities exist within all of us as we are all products of creation itself. We have pure awareness, meaning the conscious mind that creates order from our physical experience, making it comprehendible and we have an unconscious, holding mystery and everything that we deny about ourselves. Just like the cosmos, unconsciousness/darkness is made up of the majority of our psyche, therefore influencing more of what we anchor into our physical experience. It is what is held within the shadow (Universe B) that cultivates reality, much like how it was the dark matter that birthed everything. For this reason, dark matter energy is resonant with the deepest aspects of our unconscious mind, holding the power to evoke what we have refused ownership of within the shadows, deconstruct realities and clear space for new ideas to be cultivated in creation (Universe A).
How Dark Matter Interacts With You
We all face dark matter energy day to day, normally without realising it. Because it is the force in the universe that deconstructs, coming into contact with it will push you into a place where you have to look within and acknowledge what is in the shadows. This can manifest in the form of people or circumstances that are resonant with something within your deep unconscious. New-age spirituality would have you believe that the darker currents are to be removed and replaced with light, but trying to do so is like telling your inner child to go and face the wall and in doing so, refusing the very force that is responsible for initiating change in creation and your life. If we try to avoid dark matter energy, we are avoiding all of the parts of us that are needing to be seen. If we continue to ignore such parts, they become aggressive and start working through us in destructive ways.
Beyond the Myths
The term "black magic" is often painted as something entirely sinister—spells cast with malice, rituals meant to harm, or pacts that involve selling one's soul. Most of this is illusionary. Many refer to black magic as a catch all term for energy that is sent to cause harm. But here’s the truth: real black magic is simply the use of dark matter energy and intention to influence or create change, often involving the darker, shadowy, or hidden aspects of the self. When utilised with respect and ethics, it is one of the most powerful forms of self-evolution.
Unlike "white magic," which refers to light matter energy, typically focuses on healing and altruism, black magic dives into the transformative energy of the unknown and the shadow-self. It’s not inherently good or evil—its nature depends entirely on the practitioner’s true will.
Real black magic is not limited by false ideas of duality. It is important to realise that any energy has the potential to heal or harm, whether it is light energy or dark energy. Black magic, being of pure dark matter, works with the currents of Universe B, deconstructing aspects of the multiverse in order to give birth to new realities. Many are allured by the concept of black magic, seeking it out of pure curiosity without knowing the true nature of it. If you work with black magic consciously, particularly through work with darker spirits, the forces you are working with will resonate deeply with the repressed trauma within your nervous system and unconscious, forcing it to the surface to be integrated. This can become dangerous if someone does not know what they are getting themselves in for and if they are not trauma-informed. The darker currents are a direct portal to some of the most raw and primal aspects of the human psyche that have been neglected and refused ownership of. To step through such a portal will kickstart a significant process of shadow-integration that some may not be ready for.
What Is Shadow Work?
Understanding the Shadow
Coined by Carl Jung, the "shadow" refers to the parts of ourselves we repress, deny, or avoid. These hidden aspects of our personality often hold pain, trauma, and fears—but they also hold untapped power and potential.
The Shadow is frequently perceived as evil because it contains what the ego rejects - everything you refuse to acknowledge about yourself, the good as well as the perceived bad. The shadow acts like a figure trailing behind you, reminding you each time you discard rubbish on the ground, offering you a chance to become complete. Within the shadow lies the paradox of both darkness and light; everything mirrors you. For example, if you suppress your anger, you will attract many angry people into your life. If you suppress your creativity, you will attract many creative people into your life. And here's for the really triggering one; if you attract narcissists, you need to own the parts of yourself that are narcissistic.
Shadow work is the process of exploring and integrating these hidden parts of ourselves. It’s not always comfortable as it involves facing the repressed aspects of ourselves that we have repressed because they are too painful to feel. It is the most necessary, but also the most bypassed practice for true healing and self-awareness.
Many believe that engaging with your shadow involves altering your identity - it doesn't; it's about embracing every part of yourself. Battling your Shadow leads to defeat every time, while forming a partnership with it brings victory. Embracing your Shadow isn't about suppressing it; it's about channeling its energy. Achieving harmony with your Shadow won't make it disappear; it will make it more aware. The Shadow holds the hidden depths of soul and spirit. Everything you reject will confront you externally, and this is the key to working with the Shadow, as what you resist most in others offers the greatest potential for growth.
The Connection Between Black Magic and Shadow Work
Why They Go Hand in Hand
Black magic and shadow work are two sides of the same coin, simply because they both have the same purpose and that is the evolution and alignment of your soul. Both involve diving into the hidden, mysterious, and often uncomfortable aspects of existence and believe it or not, both utilise dark matter energy.
Black magic, like other types of esoteric practices, often operate from an illusion of separation, seeing such spirits and energies as external forces, when in reality, they mirror what exists within the psyche. Shadow work is internal and can assist with taking ownership of the parts that come to the surface through the practice of black magic, preventing us from externalising spirits and our wounds. Together, they create a powerful toolkit for personal transformation and empowerment.
Themes They Share
Facing Fear: Both black magic and shadow work require confronting fears and embracing discomfort.
Transformation: Both aim to create deep, lasting change by working with hidden forces.
Empowerment: By exploring the darkness, you reclaim your power and take control of your life.
Soul Evolution: Shadow integration brings one closer to their soul essence and dark matter does the same by taking you back to the source.
Ego Traps of Black Magic
Illusions of Grandeur
Black magic can be an attractive subject for those who have an internal power struggle, causing them to unconsciously gravitate towards it to have power over others or feel that they have knowledge that others do not. This is a very common trap for this practice and is not sustainable.
Superficial Intent
Black magic is a potent initiatory tool for your soul evolution. Many who approach it want to waste their time on feeding their own lack through superficial means. These superficial intentions are anything from wanting to get rich quickly, love spells, harming others etc. All of this is a total waste of time and energy and anyone who wants to approach it should drop these twisted fantasies and use it for what it is mean't for - the true evolution of their soul. Evolution will eventually lead to material benefits.
Scapegoating
People can approach black magic because it looks cool and edgy but as soon as it starts to unearth repressed traumas from the nervous system, they refuse ownership of these traumas and scapegoat the practice or the spirits, painting a false picture that they are being attacked by something outside of them. This will very likely lead to the person retraumatising themselves.
Avoidance
Believe it or not, black magic, a practice that initiates hardcore shadow work is often approached to avoid the shadow and feed the ego. When tapping into Universe B energy (dark matter), you are tapping into forces who's role is literally to deconstruct your false self and uproot your deepest shadows. Once again, this is dangerous and is not sustainable for the practitioner.
The Power of Working With Darkness
Embracing Transformation
Darkness is pure potential and the birth place of new realities, therefore, it is where transformation begins. Think of a seed buried in the soil—it must embrace the darkness before it can sprout into the light. The same applies to personal growth. Black magic and shadow work help you shed old patterns, release pain, and emerge stronger and better for it.
The Gifts of the Shadow
When you explore your shadow, you don’t just confront pain—you also uncover hidden gifts:
Creativity: The shadow often holds repressed creativity and inspiration.
Strength: Facing your fears builds resilience and inner strength.
Power: Within the shadow lies our repressed power that is encased in illusionary beliefs.
The Inner Child: Within the shadow, our inner child resides, holding our innocence and playfulness that we have learned is not safe to feel.
Authenticity: By embracing your whole self, you become more authentic and aligned.
Engaging In Dark Alchemy
When you consciously work with dark matter energy for your healing and self-evolution, you are engaging in arguably the most powerful evolutionary pathway. However, you are also engaging in the most intense and potentially dangerous pathway as well. It is essential to understand that dark energy is an intense form of shadow-integration that will quickly uproot the repressed traumas in your nervous system. One must be prepared for such an endeavour, and ideally, should be very familiar with working on their shadow.
Below, are steps for engaging in the darker alchemies:
Set Clear Intentions
What do you hope to achieve? Intention and perspective are essential for this process. This intention will inform which route you take.
Become Familiar With Energy Work
Before diving into darker alchemies, start with the fundamentals:
Grounding and centering techniques.
Journeying/astral travel
Sensing and perceiving energy & spirits
My shamanic training courses provide in-depth training that are suitable for all levels. These will give you the foundations from the perspective of journey/astral travel, shadow work, grounding and working in sacred space. If you are new to these practices then start with my Foundation Course Into Shamanism.
Respect the Practice & the spirits
Approach black magic with respect and responsibility. It’s not a game—it’s a serious practice that requires focus and intention.
Infernal Spirits (Daemons)
This is for practitioners who are comfortable and experienced with facing themselves on a deep level. Infernal spirits are the spirits of the primordial chaos and are comprised of predominantly dark matter energy. The invocation of these spirits is the process of downloading their consciousness into your energy field and nervous system, exposing you to the necessary alchemies of that given spirit. Doing so will trigger the release of repressed trauma from the nervous system. I have a few training programs that are great for this. My Underworld Pathworking will take you through the process of working with Lilith and the nine gatekeepers of the underworld. This will take you on a very deep process of healing and will help you prepare for deeper initiatory processes such as The Qliphoth. I also have the Wheel of Shadows program, for those who wish to explore the daemonic medicine wheel. This contains initiation through four goetic daemons, each of which are resonant with one of the four cardinal directions.
Infernal Initiation
Once the practitioner is experienced with infernal spirits and wants to proceed further on this path of soul-evolution, infernal initiation is an option. However, once you start on the rabbit hole of infernal initiation, you will not be able to turn back. I have also launched a new program called the Qliphothic Foundation Course which is designed to introduce you to the workings of Qliphothic initiation (Dark Kabbalah).
Benefits of Combining Black Magic and Shadow Work
Deeper Healing
Black magic can amplify the effects of shadow work, helping you release and transform repressed emotions and beliefs.
Empowerment
By working with both inner and outer darkness, you reclaim your power and step into your full potential.
Holistic Growth
Together, black magic and shadow work address every aspect of your being—mind, body, and spirit.
Is Darkness Really Something to Fear?
The Truth About Fear
Fear of darkness often stems from fear of the unknown. Darkness is not your enemy, it will only reveal to you how you have been your own enemy without realising it. These currents of energy are a teacher, guide, and a source of untapped power & potential.
When you face the darkness within and around you, you realise it’s not something to fear as all is within you—it’s something to understand, respect, and work with to honour the true evolution of your soul.
Final Thoughts
Black magic and shadow work aren’t for the faint of heart—they require courage, curiosity, and a willingness to face the unknown. But they also offer profound rewards: healing, empowerment, and transformation.
The darkness isn’t your enemy—it’s a part of you. By embracing it, you can unlock your true potential and step into a more balanced, authentic, and powerful version of yourself.
